The Language Beneath the Surface — Understanding a Horse’s Emotional World

They See More Than We Know!

Our horses read us with astonishing clarity.

Not just our gestures or movements, but our energetic state—how we carry ourselves, how we feel, what we’re about to do next, and whether our intention aligns with our body.

It’s part of their survival and social intelligence.

They don’t just read us. They feel us.

The Question Is: Can We Feel Them?

Are we attuned to the way our horses express emotion—joy, curiosity, hesitation, grief?
Can we perceive what’s moving in them, moment to moment?

Often, we miss the subtleties.
But when we learn to notice, we unlock a new depth of connection.

Pawing Isn’t Always What It Seems

Take for instance a behavior often misunderstood: pawing.

With my gelding, pawing wasn’t frustration. It was an invitation—his way of saying,
“I’m ready to play with you.”

He’d greet me while still chewing hay, then lift a foot and paw gently. Before I could even get the halter on, he’d start walking to the gate—ready for whatever came next.

Some might see that and assume agitation. But when you understand your horse’s language, you can feel the joy behind the gesture.

The Nicker That Speaks Volumes

Two of my mares do something extraordinary.

They approach and stand directly in front of me—so close their bodies gently press into mine—and then they nicker.

Not for food.
Not out of habit.
But softly and intentionally, as if to say:
“I’m here. I feel safe.”

This is how horses say yes to our presence.
They speak with their bodies, and their bodies never lie.

Horses Feel Grief Deeply

One afternoon, I was standing with one of my mares when the herd began to move away. She stayed with me.

But when the others returned—trotting, loose and playful—she paused. Her eyes followed the group, and then turned toward the place where one horse used to be. A horse who had recently passed.

Her body shifted. Her breath held. She scanned the place where her friend had last stood. And in that stillness, I could feel her grief.

She remembered. She noticed the absence. And she processed it through movement. Quietly, she walked to the exact spot where the trauma had happened and stood there… present, feeling, grieving.

Horses grieve. They remember. They express.

The Gift of Noticing

If we can become more fluent in this unspoken language—if we can let ourselves feel them without trying to manage or label—it will change how we relate.

We are often taught to analyze or correct horse behaviour and body parts. But what if we chose to notice instead?

Notice their breath, their blink, the way they shift their weight, the tone of their movement, the subtle invitations they extend.

When we do this, something beautiful happens:
The space between us becomes a place of reciprocity.
A shared rhythm.
The beginning of Hum.

Start With One Question

What is your horse expressing today?
And are you willing to be an open book in response?

Connection Is Always Possible

The relationships I've had with my horses are life-changing.
That depth of connection—of trust, of emotional honesty—is available to us all.

And if I can help you move closer to that kind of bond, I will.
Because your horse deserves it.
You deserve it.
We all do.

Because once you feel this kind of connection, it stays with you.
And there’s no turning back.
